The oldest of the Mennonite towns, LOMA PLATA is arranged along a similar pattern to Filadelfia, with a neat grid square system of side streets arranged around a dusty central avenue. Loma Plata’s main tourist attraction is the Museo de Historia Mennonita (daily 7am–noon & 2–6pm; free) on the main avenue.

Though small, it is a fascinating documentation of the trials and tribulations that faced the original settlers and the challenges that they had to overcome. Buses from Asunción to Filadelfia pass through Loma Plata en route. One of the best places to stay is at the Loma Plata Inn (T0492/253235; 150,000G), which also has a good buffet restaurant, Chaco Grill.
